About Us

The Story Behind BATIN

BATIN was born from a deep reverence for Kashmir's living textile heritage — a tradition passed down through generations of master artisans whose hands carry centuries of knowledge, patience, and artistry.

We are more than a brand. We are a bridge between the ancient craft villages of the Kashmir Valley and the world — ensuring that the extraordinary skill of Kashmiri embroidery not only survives, but thrives.

Our Roots

Kashmir has long been celebrated as the cradle of some of the world's most exquisite textile traditions. From the snow-draped valleys where artisans sit by candlelight, needle in hand, to the bustling workshops where looms hum with purpose — every BATIN piece begins with a story that is centuries old.

We work directly with over 1,000 skilled craftspeople across the Kashmir Valley, building relationships rooted in trust, fair wages, and mutual respect. When you wear BATIN, you carry the work of real hands, real families, and a real community.

The Art of Kashmiri Embroidery

Each BATIN piece is a testament to three of Kashmir's most treasured embroidery traditions:

Sozni

Sozni is the art of fine needle embroidery — delicate, intricate, and breathtakingly detailed. Worked with a single needle on both sides of the fabric, Sozni patterns often depict the flora of the Kashmir Valley: chinar leaves, lotus blooms, and winding vines. A single shawl can take months, sometimes years, to complete.

Aari

Aari embroidery uses a hooked needle to create bold, flowing designs with remarkable speed and precision. The technique allows for rich, textured patterns that bring fabric to life with depth and movement. Aari work is a signature of Kashmiri craftsmanship — instantly recognisable, endlessly captivating.

Tilla

Tilla work is the art of gold and silver thread embroidery, traditionally reserved for royalty and ceremonial occasions. Using fine metallic threads, artisans create luminous patterns that shimmer with every movement. Tilla is the embodiment of Kashmiri luxury — opulent, timeless, and utterly unique.

Our Commitment

At BATIN, ethical craftsmanship is not a marketing promise — it is the foundation of everything we do.

  • Fair wages, always. Every artisan we work with is paid fairly for their time and skill, with no compromise.
  • Sustainable practices. We source natural fibres and dyes responsibly, minimising our environmental footprint while honouring traditional methods.
  • Preserving heritage. By creating consistent demand for handcrafted work, we help ensure that younger generations see a future in these ancient crafts — rather than abandoning them for other livelihoods.
  • Transparency. We believe you deserve to know where your purchase comes from and who made it.

Handcrafted for Those Who Value the Real

In a world of fast fashion and mass production, BATIN stands apart. Every stitch is intentional. Every piece is one-of-a-kind. And every purchase is an act of support for a community of extraordinary human beings who have dedicated their lives to keeping a beautiful tradition alive.
